Choose your setting

Each organization runs the program a little differently. See who collects, who does what and the tips that matter in your setting.

    Avoid these

    Common collection mistakes

    Skipping the 30-minute wait

Food, drinks and residue can affect the sample.

    Touching the swab tip

Handle the swab by the stick only.

Peeling the pouch all the way

The swab goes back into the same pouch.

    Swabbing too lightly or briefly

Press firmly for a full 30 seconds per cheek.

    Bristles touching a surface

Air dry in the air, not on the counter.

Missing name or date of birth

Label the envelope before it goes in the bag.

    Questions

    Frequently asked

    Who is this guide for?

Anyone who collects PGx swabs: pharmacists, nurses, medical assistants and facility staff who support testing days.

What if a sample does not have enough DNA?

The lab checks every sample. If one falls short, the facility is notified and a new sample is collected.

Can the patient have water before the swab?

No eating, drinking, smoking, gum or brushing for 30 minutes. Right before swabbing, the patient rinses with water.

Where can I get more collection kits?
